Valleywag kills Uncov once and for all

Folks, it's my fault. I broke Uncov, the hysterically funny anti-TechCrunch which so ably dissects why startups fail. It all started with an innocent idea for a stunt: Send Ted Dziuba, Uncov's lead writer, to the Crunchies, to see what he made of the TechCrunch-sponsored startup awards show. "It will be a nonstop festival of fail," I promised him. Dziuba, after a bit of fussing, agreed. The result is classic Uncov: Dziuba chronicles the presenters' ineptitude and fittingly doesn't write about a single "winner" — predictably, he found them unworthy of mention. But I didn't expect this: "One more thing. This is the last Uncov. Ever. I have been getting tired of it, and this has been manifesting itself in my writing. After seeing the spectacle at the Crunchies, I think it's finally time to quit." Ted, you're just going to quit like that? Fail.

    Valleywag editor hates technology

In an effort to fight off the rise of the machines, Valleywag editor Owen Thomas knocked over a monitor that cost more than his salary (that's just our little joke, Owen doesn't have a salary) at the NewTeeVee conference held by his former writer Om Malik. Former Valleywag target Ryan Block, editor of Valleywag owner Gawker Media's blog Gizmodo competitor Engadget, took this photo of the aftermath with all the love in his heart.

    Is TechCrunch turning into Valleywag?

That's not our question. It comes from this blog.. The evidence: these headlines, which the writer apparently feels are beneath Arrington.
    * Breast Isn't Best On Facebook
    * Something Going On At Twitter?
    * Googlers Get Kinky On Wikipedia
    * Multi-Day Paypal Subscription Outage
    * Like Sands Through The Hour Glass, Another Person Is Claiming To Have Founded Facebook
    * Sprint Sucks And Their New Website Is Stupid
    * Attack Of The Fake Bloggers
Iyer clearly thinks Arrington is going to the dogs. But we think those heds are fab—and can't understand why everyone doesn't want to be like us.

    Guest editor over & out

CHRIS MOHNEY — Thanks for letting me muck up the place this past month. It's been fun, and though I'm not either of the Nicks who've been hanging out here lately, readers were receptive enough to my presence not to roast me outright. It's been more of a slow burn, lobster-style, cooking me steadily before I even realized I was done. No idea whose tender flesh you'll be feasting on next week — you think I'm in that loop? — but I'm sure it will be succulent. To the alarmingly high number of people I offended here in such a short time, I can honestly say, I already forgot your names. So no hard feelings, and enjoy your weekend.

UPDATE: I'm told Nick Denton will be back on the beam for next week, just in case you're keeping score.

    Vote on the new design

Well, on one aspect of the new design, anyway. You'll note that the previous days' posts are now compressed to headlines at the bottom of this page, as opposed to running full-length until they scroll off from new posts appearing at top. The idea is to allow for easier skimming, rather than browsing more post-text on the frontpage. Do you, as readers, like this? Vote your conscience.

New design slouches toward Internet to be born

Not a wholly new design, but some tweaks on how images look and how posts are organized. Still pushing all the buttons and pulling all the levers, but have patience, and we should get the kinks worked out soon. Feel free to vent wrath in the comments, and if you see odd behavior or bugs, let us know (along with OS/browser name/version) at tips@valleywag.com.

    Valleywag writer wanted

Valleywag, the tech news tabloid of Silicon Valley, is looking for an editor versed in Valley verbiage to file brilliant daily items for this site. This is a full-time job and pays accordingly. If you're interested, write a stunning paragraph about yourself and a stirring paragraph about your suitability for the job and send both to managing editor Lockhart Steele, lock@gawker.com. No resumes or attachments, please.

It's Nice to Be Met by You

CHRIS MOHNEY — Hello. As Nick Denton has tired of playing the role of his own dancing monkey, I'll be filling in as Valleywag guest editor for February. Nick will still be loitering on the premises to post on arcane business matters, so if you've grown attached to his natural gentility, don't fret. As for myself, lately of Gawker and before that Gridskipper, I'm pleased to add the Silicon Valley notch to my bedpost. Still, your generous tips and suggestions are needed more desperately than ever before, so by all means send 'em in to tips@valleywag.com.

I Will Be Your Substitute Snarker

Nick Douglas is off on vacation this week. Gawker Media, always with its finger to the pulse of on-line publishing, has found the best writer to maintaing Valleywag's journalistic intergrity. Unfornately Dvorak apparently already had a blog, so instead management dropped the ball picked Rick Abruzzo. Mr. Abruzzo currently writes for Snark 2.0 site, supr.c.ilio.us.
