    Valleywag kills Uncov once and for all

    Folks, it's my fault. I broke Uncov, the hysterically funny anti-TechCrunch which so ably dissects why startups fail. It all started with an innocent idea for a stunt: Send Ted Dziuba, Uncov's lead writer, to the Crunchies, to see what he made of the TechCrunch-sponsored startup awards show. "It will be a nonstop festival of fail," I promised him. Dziuba, after a bit of fussing, agreed. The result is classic Uncov: Dziuba chronicles the presenters' ineptitude and fittingly doesn't write about a single "winner" — predictably, he found them unworthy of mention. But I didn't expect this: "One more thing. This is the last Uncov. Ever. I have been getting tired of it, and this has been manifesting itself in my writing. After seeing the spectacle at the Crunchies, I think it's finally time to quit." Ted, you're just going to quit like that? Fail.

    In an effort to fight off the rise of the machines, Valleywag editor Owen Thomas knocked over a monitor that cost more than his salary (that's just our little joke, Owen doesn't have a salary) at the NewTeeVee conference held by his former writer Om Malik. Former Valleywag target Ryan Block, editor of Valleywag owner Gawker Media's blog Gizmodo competitor Engadget, took this photo of the aftermath with all the love in his heart.

    Guest editor over & out

    CHRIS MOHNEY — Thanks for letting me muck up the place this past month. It's been fun, and though I'm not either of the Nicks who've been hanging out here lately, readers were receptive enough to my presence not to roast me outright. It's been more of a slow burn, lobster-style, cooking me steadily before I even realized I was done. No idea whose tender flesh you'll be feasting on next week — you think I'm in that loop? — but I'm sure it will be succulent. To the alarmingly high number of people I offended here in such a short time, I can honestly say, I already forgot your names. So no hard feelings, and enjoy your weekend.

    UPDATE: I'm told Nick Denton will be back on the beam for next week, just in case you're keeping score.

You'll note that the previous days' posts are now compressed to headlines at the bottom of this page, as opposed to running full-length until they scroll off from new posts appearing at top. The idea is to allow for easier skimming, rather than browsing more post-text on the frontpage. Do you, as readers, like this? Vote your conscience.
